The Nerdery - Overnight Website Challenge

Twin Cities 2011, March 26-27

Someplace Safe

Paired with Team Venture

Someplace Safe is a non profit organization working to eliminate violence in West Central Minnesota and beyond. We provide a variety of services to victims and survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence and general crimes, and their families. Our direct service area includes an eight-county area, with nine Outreach offices, five Parenting Time Centers for supervised visitation and exchanges, an Emergency Shelter, and a newly opened Thrift Store.

What new functionality we are looking for

Someplace Safe is in dire need of a website that can keep up with the needs of our clients, our communities and our supporters. We envision a website that is easily navigable for individuals of any skill-set and experience level. It needs to be easy to understand, yet comprehensive in its capabilities.

We would envision in-depth, printable information and resources on each of our focus areas of service (domestic abuse, sexual violence & general crimes), as well as comprehensive information on each of our programs: Outreach, Parenting Time Centers, Emergency Shelter and Thrift Store.

We would also like tools and options for community and supporter interactions, including: capabilities to sign up for newsletters and communications online; a blog for sharing news and special events; tools for hosting community events and fundraisers; availability of Someplace Safe's curriculum and educational materials; options for contributing and giving online with minimal effort and cost; and an interactive calendar with upcoming agency and community events and opportunities clearly and easily displayed. These functions would help Someplace Safe become better connected as we work to foster support for the crucial work that we do for victims and survivors in Minnesota.

Our website would also need to be easily updated and maintained by staff.

How the new functionality will help

Safety. Options. Hope. A new website would enable Someplace Safe to better provide all three of these crucial components to those who need it most.

In many instances, victims of violence have only limited options and access to information about seeking help and finding safety. Someplace Safe sees our website as a crucial part of this process, and we want to be able to offer the most up to date and comprehensive information and resources available to us. Online access and resources are even more important in the region we serve, encompassing 6,000+ square miles of rural areas with limited options to reach out, making a readily available online resource even more crucial. An expanded website would also help us to expand and share materials, information and resources specific to populations who we are not fully reaching, including disability communities, ethnic communities, male victims and survivors, GLBT individuals, elderly populations and others.

A more professional looking, navigable website will also be an asset for our communities, allowing anyone who is interested in getting involved with their local programs to easily obtain information and resources to share and help educate others.

Finally, a more comprehensive, supporter-focused website will help individuals better identify ways in which to show their support for Someplace Safe, and in turn, help Someplace Safe to become better connected and focused on the needs of those who support our work and mission.

I work for Someplace Safe. It has changed my life. I worked as an advocate with people who needed safety, options and hope as they left an abusive relationship. Forty years ago, when I was going through an abusive marriage, there was no help for me. So, to be able to make a difference for a battered woman and her children means everything to me!

Someplace Safe is a great organization that strives to help victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and general crimes. The work that they do is relentless and in great need. A new website would be handy as most of the area Someplace Safe provides services to are rural and victims are not able to make it to the office.

I can't begin to tell you what a difference Someplace Safe has made in my family's life! The people who work their are so passionate about what they do and they are there for the victims. Our here in rural MN, it would be so helpful to have a place that we could get some of the information and we needed without having to worry about finding a way to get there. Someplace Safe deserves this work for the service they provide to others!!

As a teacher, I have had several families who have used Someplace Safe
for various reasons. I would like to see a nice website to help individuals (and families) learn about what help is available and how to obtain the help they need. Also, it would be handy for this organization to post its needs so contributers know what is needed.

This would be an excellant opportunity for Someplace Safe. Being in a rural community, raising donations for any improvments is very challanging as you have to keep going back to the same folks that always donate. This would be a specific service donated that would be earmarked for the websit. Anything that can improve the website so families in crisis can find information quicker and easier would be wonderful. When you are in a crisis situation, time is of the essence. The staff would be able to better communicate with volunteers also.

Often the abuser monitors phone calls, etc. If the victim could obtain the information they need unobtrusively via a web site it could save a life.

Someplace Safe needs to have a website that can reach as many people as possible. It would be a way for anyone needing assistance to anonymously obtain information with out putting themselves as risk.
The site would also be able to keep contributors informed about needs and upcoming plans. Communications would be greatly improved.

Someplace Safe's Parenting Time Centers are a safe place to connect family. Wouldn't it be wonderful if each center had a webcam for those who couldn't travel. We are one half way between the Alantic and Pacific oceans. There is so much to be done. There is so many to reach. What a wonderful way this would be to help OUR children...

I think that organizations like Someplace Safe are extraordinarily important, especially in those areas where services for vulnerable populations are scarce. Having a website would enable Someplace Safe to expand its footprint, thus enabling this fine organization to help reach even more people.

Someplace Safe really does need a new website. The work that Someplace Safe does is extraordinary and makes such a huge difference in peoples lives. However, their website doesn't keep up with the technology available. A new website would make a world of difference for victims. How great would it be to have all the information you need at your fingertips. I can't think of a more worth while cause than Someplace Safe.

I am an advocate who works for a disability rights organization. I often refer individuals I work with to Someplace Safe for those dealing with the trauma of domestic violence, assault, and safety concerns. I know when I refer someone to them they will receive the highest qualifty of service and individual attention. There is no other service like this in our area and they are truly experts in their field. They go the extra mile for victims and would be sadly missed if they were no longer in our community.

I volunteer to serve on the Board of Directors because the organization and staff do the thankless work of providing safety, options and hope to victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence. Without the basic safety of shelter from the storm of abuse and violence, and advocates that not only educate victims about options but also hold the victims' hands and walk with them, many women and children would never have the courage to hope for a life beyond the violence. The desire to nurture hope is palpable in passion of all staff and volunteers. Thank you for considering Someplace Safe for the Nerdery Overnight Website Challenge.

Someplace safe is a great organization! It helps many families cope when the chips are down. It gives many people a place to turn to when they have no place else to go. It gives many HOPE! The staff works tirelessly to help all they can. They are a wonderful group and much of what they do goes unnoticed. They really are a bunch of Lifesavers! No one should have to live with violence or in fear and the staff at Someplace Safe does everything they can to make the world a better place! Please consider them for the Nerdery Overnight website! This would be such a great help to many women and children! They deserve so much more!

An easy to use web site is a wonderful way to connect to those that can help! Many community members are unaware of all the great ways Someplace Safe is helping our communities. The future of many women and children can be positive by this agency's efforts! As a volunteer organization with many members using the Internet, we can immediately see the needs, get ourselves organized and pitch in. As volunteers, we will stay current about the services and perhaps be the link for saving someone's life.

The majority of us feel safe in our homes with our families. But there are others who need to leave their homes in order to be safe. It might be for a night or several nights until an explosive situation cools down or is resolved. Just imagine - rushing out into the night or day -- no food, money, or other necessities. Being alone or having your children with you. Putting your trust in strangers to find a safe place you can stay. Thank you to all those who have made a safe place for those in need. The need is great!!

Someplace Safe provides a tremendous service to Otter Tail County and the region as a whole. They are a safety net to victims of domestic violence, and also provide support and opportunities for the victim. They work well with other agencies to meet the needs of their clients and are willing to partner to offer educational services to children and families.

We appreciate the work they do.

It is easy to judge other families, or easier yet to ignore them. The need for help in this area is great, and unfortunatly, it seems to be getting greater. Some people don't know how to deal with the pressures of these stressfull times, unemployment, bullying, drugs, alchol,ect... Organizations like this are in great need. Someplace Safe handles things most of us have no clue are even needed. In this technical world that we live in, an easy to use, easy to come across website is crucial to people in that situation.

Someplace Safe serves over 3000 victims of violence annually. Over half of those victims are between the ages 18 and 45 and they use the internet! On bare bones budget Someplace Safe launched their website in 2007. It is in dire need of a professional upgrade so we can reach those in the 21st Century who need our services or wish to donate, volunteer, or provide classroom education. We provide 24-7 services so could easily accommodate the Nerdery Overnight Website Challenge!

I work in an area school and know that many families are in various places in their lives with tremendous pressures and economic tight spots, thus adding to the daily stress and in need of support and or a caring organization to reach out to. Someplace Safe provides an incredible service to our rural Minnesota community, and having a functional, well organized, easy to use website that showcases the resources they provide would be a tremendous addition to their program. Having ready access to the resources needed in one location that can be accessed anonymously and from any place with an internet connection would truly benefit those in most need and may be just the thing to save lives.

A website could also be used to organize volunteers and donations, which would of course allow Someplace Safe to improve the services they are able to provide and spread the message of HOPE.

When I was a young girl growing up in rural Minnesota, I suffered
physical and emotional abuse at the hands of my father. There were
no services available to me....everyone turned the other way when
I went to school with a broken arm. It changed who I was. It taught
me that I was not worth anything. Abuse changes who you are inside.
If we can do one thing to help one person it is worth it. We all
need to turn towards the problems and help. Rural areas in winter
can only add to the problems these women and children already face.
Please consider Someplace Safe when you award this website. The
staff there cares......deeply.

Someplace Safe has done so many wonderful things for this community and their outreach is so important especially in these tough economic times. Financial stresses by people make them so much more vulnerable. I hope that they can continue to grow and help people who feel they have no place to turn.

The case for someplace safe is simple. Someplace Safe is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a safer world for everyone. Today, an enormous number of people are using the internet to research and find solutions to their problems. Victims of crime, those who want to help victims of crime, and those who are looking to spread awareness about the nature and effects of domestic abuse, sexual assault and all other crimes are no different.

If Someplace Safe were to have the site they envision it would allow easier and more convenient access to advocates and important resources that can help victims and their loved ones to overcome or help another overcome the harrowing effects of domestic violence and sexual assault. It would also allow the people who work for Someplace Safe to perform their jobs quicker, more efficiently, and just plain better. Last but not least, especially for a rural service area, an easily navigated website can provide victims contact with a world outside their normal experience.

The fact is that Someplace Safe wants everyone to know they are not alone and there is help…and perhaps most importantly, there is hope.

Thank you for considering Someplace Safe.

Someplace Safe is just that: a safe place for victims to find comfort, learn about resources, and get whatever assistance they need to be able to move on. Someplace Safe provides a supportive environment for clients and their children; services to primary and secondary victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and general crimes; a 24-hour crisis line; information and referrals; a program of community education and awareness; legal advocacy for clients through civil and criminal proceedings; a safe environment where children can visit with a non-custodial adult; and a women's shelter. Someplace Safe offers services to an underserved community. It is difficult to find resources in a rural setting. Someplace Safe serves all people regardless of gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation. It is a very deserving organzation and would benefit greatly from having an updated website.

Someplace Safe is a critical organization in our small community. Over the 11 years that I have lived here, I have known dozens (literally) of people who were helped through challenging abuse and sexual assault situations by the amazing work of the advocates here. The organization also serves as a clearinghouse for education around issues of domestic violence and sexual assault. The advocates have been generous enough to mentor many students at the university where I work and to help them with educational campaigns on our campus. In short, the organization helps to both alleviate suffering and prevent it--and to create systemic change through education. A website that would make it possible for Someplace Safe to reach more people is critical.

On a more personal note, I adopted a teenage abuse survivor a few years ago. She told me recently, "I wish I'd had a place to turn like Someplace Safe when I was in my biological home." The more visible the organization is, the more likely they will be to be able to help people like my daughter.

Thanks, Someplace Safe, for all you do!

It is most important that women and children (and men) have access to varied and multiple sources of places where they can reach out for help. Computer access may be the only method that many might have to look for a safe haven from abuse. I encourage you to share in this important mission by supporting Someplace Safe by providing a website. Right now, this minute, there is someone out there in need of Help. As an advocate for Someplace Safe I would be thrilled to see an updated website. Many of the victims we work with use internet on a daily basis and would be able to find our services faster and easier. The work we do is rewarding and challenging, with an updated website we could get info out to the community as a whole, letting them know the needs in their very own towns and cities. Having been fortunate enough not to have needed the type of services offered by Someplace Safe thus far in my life, I truly believe that it is of the utmost importance that such services ARE available to all those who need them. I am lucky, I have never had to use such a place, but that doesn't mean I will always be that lucky. That is why Someplace Safe is so crucial for not just women that have been battered but for all women. Because if you ever have to flee in the middle of the night, don't you want Someplace Safe to go? I know I would. Support Someplace Safe and all they do by giving them a website makeover so they can educate the public about the great services they offer because you never know, it could be your daughter, grand-children or yourself that may need Someplace Safe to go.

As an advocate with Someplace Safe, I see the marvelous work and life changing advocacy that happens! Just this morning a woman who had fled a battering husband with her two children, shared with me her gratefulnessa and joy about having a new apartment, a new job, a new life. Hope flowed from her voice and tears filled her eyes with the beginnings of a life full of peace and safety. I have been a member of the Board of Directors for several years and am very familiar with the work the agency does on a daily basis. The advocates and staff have a genuine passion for the work they do and work tirelessly to meet the needs of their clients. They also work to insure that Someplace Safe has a positive image in their communities. Their dedication and compassion gives strength to victims who often feel like they have nothing left.
Someplace Safe operates largely in rural communities and victims often live a long distance from the nearest Someplace Safe office or the shelter. An updated website could offer them the link to the services they desperately need. Thank you for your consideration.

I worked for Someplace Safe Parenting Time Centers and saw what a huge need the services are for people in rural west central MN. Those I met that had not heard of Someplace Safe were inspired by the stories of the clients and victims we served. Many people prefer to utilize the website for making donations, researching statistics, locating volunteer or employment information, and making referrals. As one of the only domestic violence resources in the area, a new website is vital to connect victims with the needed services and supports.

I have been blessed not to need the services of Same Place Safe but I know how many victims of violence in our area have. Someplace Safe is a vital organization working to make our community safer. They serve the immediate needs of victims, the translational needs for victims and their families and they address the long term need to stop violence through education. Someplace Safe is a much needed resource in the community. As our economy fails more and more abuse is prevailing and more individuals will need a safe place to go. A website would be a great asset for those that are bound by their four walls to get more information and education. Thank you in advance.

I work for Someplace Safe as an advocate in one of the outreach offices. I see EVERY DAY how much our organization helps victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other crimes. An updated website would make it so much easier to help our clients get the help they need, especially when they are dealing with scary situations. We need the website to be user friendly so the people we help would not become easily discouraged.

As an Educator, Advocate and a survivor, I know how important it is to get the best information out in the easiest format possible.

Please guve serious consideration to awarding Someplace Safe your website redesign. The women and children who have to make use of their services need to be able to connect with someone remotely, and this would be a fantastic tool to help. Thank you.

Someplace Safe provides such a valuable resource to west central Minnesota - from education, to protection, to advocacy. As more and more people turn to the net for information and assistance, it's going to be evermore critical for service agencies to have top notch web pages. Winning this competition would provide Someplace Safe with an important tool in their work and would allow them to continue spending their limited financial resources on the people they serve.

I have been a volunteer for Someplace Safe and I see how hard the advocates work to help those in need of their services. This organization works on very little funding and having a website done for them would help out greatly.

As a member of the community and a relative of someone who once needed a place to help them leave an abusive relationship, I can say that Someplace Safe is a wonderful resource to have in our community. Please support them in obtaining a new web site to better their service to the community.

Unfortunately day after day Women and children fall victim to Domestic Violence; many of them we know personally but live their life in silence. They feel overpowered, threatened and helpless. No one deserves to live their life in fear for their safety or that of their children! Someplace Safe is their hope for the life they deserve. The passion and dedication of the staff and volunteers of Someplace Safe provide victims a safe environment while they educate them about the options that are available to them. They will hold their hand; and share their tears; offer them hope before building their courage and showing them there is a life they deserve FREE of violence and suffering. Thank You for considering Someplace Safe for the Nerdery Overnight Website Challenge, your help can make a difference in the lives of many! It may even save the life of someone you know!

Someplace Safe is in a rural small town and serves not only the surrounding, often isolated women of the region but also the young women on the campus and living off campus who are so vulnerable to abusive men in dates and relationships. These younger women would find a website a natural resource given the ease their generation has with accessing information on line. If a woman can get away and access the website via a friend or the library, she can avoid being detected by her abuser.

A young woman (or any woman for that matter) who has had her trust violated and her basic safety and sanity threatened by domestic violence needs all the tools available to help her escape hat torture. We create survivors rather than victims by giving them the tools they need to make the choices that will lead them towards a safer, saner life without violence. In a rural area, this is doubly true for the isolated women who are frequently physically as well as emotionally trapped.

I hope Someplace Safe gets the chance to have a vibrant, useful website. It may be the only link to freedom some of these women will find. I am a survivor from another place who got away and I have a terrific life out here in the country. But I know for some, it is a nightmare of fear, pain and isolation. If this website extends a hand of support, it will have accomplished a mighty thing, indeed.

As an educator, Someplace Safe has provided some invaluable time and resources to families I work with. Having an updated and enticing website would not only help people know what services Someplace provides, but it would also allow them to determine how to obtain the services they need in their lives at a chaotic time.

Thank You for considering Someplace Safe for the Nerdery Overnight Website Challenge. With ever increasing cuts at ever level, Someplace Safe continues to offer families Safety, Options, and Hope. It can be difficult though to have funds to develop the dream web site! But as the Executive Director Jeanne Jacobs stated, many people we can help are computer uses. You would be helping reach those people by choosing us!

I attended a support group for survivors of domestic violence. The advocates at Someplace Safe and other survivors gave me a lot of encouragement and support. I want Someplace Safe to be able to help everyone who needs their support.

The work of Someplace Safe is absolutely esssential in our community. Organizations such as this are always on the edge financially. It's the 21st Century, and Someplace Safe needs to utilize the web to the fullest in order to reach its clients; communicate with its staff, volunteers and justice partners; and use its limited resources wisely.

Someplace Safe is an incredibly important resource, and a well-designed website would make this resource available to a wider range of users.

Someplace Safe is beam of light for those living in the dark, lonely, isolated place of domestic abuse. As a survivor of domestic abuse, I know this problem exsists among the old, the young, the rich and the poor. The internet is a great tool to reach those in need, and to gain support from those that can help. Please help support Someplace Safe in the very needed services they provide.
